EarthStone Wall System
The EarthStone Wall System is a gravity type retaining wall that is constructed
using precast concrete blocks stacked one block on top of another without the
use of mortar, grout, or geogrid reinforcement. The EarthStone Wall
System has several advantages over conventional Segmental Retaining Wall
(SRW) systems.
EarthStone Wall System Advantages
EarthStone Wall Excavation & Backfill Comparison
EarthStone does not require the
placement of geogrid reinforcing,
which reduces the amount of
excavation by 1/3 for a 15始 high
wall and reduces the amount of
backfill by 1/3 also. Therefore,
EarthStone walls can be installed
in a fraction of the time that a
conventional SRW system
requires.
Since EarthStone does not require geogrid reinforcing, there is a cost savings in not purchasing geogrid and the labor to place the geogrid.
Excavation Comparison
- Crib-wall 15' high 9.3 cu. yds. per LF
- EarthStone 15' high 2.7 cu. yds. per LF

EarthStone Assembly Comparisons
Typical SRW systems require 100% coverage of block during construction. EarthStone can be assemble in either an open, closed or alternating assembly. This allows the wall to be constructed with fewer blocks than conventional SRW systems.
- Alternating Assembly
- Closed Assembly
- Open Assembly
Using the Open or Alternating Assembly method can save in purchasing fewer blocks, and save labor costs in installing the blocks. Because EarthStone requires less excavation, backfill, no geogrid, savings in installing few blocks, these types of walls can be constructed in a fraction of the time required by conventional SRW systems.
Open and Alternating Assembly methods allow
plants to be planted between the block. This
creates an excellent sound absorption quality and
provides an area for vegetation to grow where the
concrete retaining wall is located. This added
vegetation will enhance the beauty of your project
and provide an environmental habitat, unlike other
wall systems.

Summary of EarthStone Advantages over Conventional SRW始s
- Initial Excavation is minimal
- No continuous inspection for compaction by Soils Engineer.
- No stockpiling graded material
- No shoring required during installation (Based on soil stability analysis by Soils Engineer.
- No re-compaction of soil during installation
- No additional grading above wall required
- Up to 30% fewer block purchased when using the open assembly method
- Labor savings in having to place few block in open & alternating assembly
- No geogrid purchase or labor to install geogrid
- Less backfill material required to purchase and place
Each wall over 3始 in height must be designed by a licensed structural engineer.
Consult your local building department for specific height limitations.
